UK Heat (Oct. 2006)

To celebrate the new run of Lost, William Key meets its main hunk.

There was an earthquake on Hawaii where Lost is filmed a few weeks ago. You live there – everything all right?

I lived in Southern California for nine years, so I’ve lived through some earthquakes, but this was the most intense I’ve ever felt. It woke me and my wife, we bolted out of bed, the kids freaked out. It was a 6.6 right on the Big island, which is a couple of hundred miles from where we are on Oahu. There was no damage, but the whole island was without electricity for 17 hours. It was one of those incredibly odd experiences.

An almost Lost-y experience, you might say.

It was a kind of Lost-y style moment, yeah. My first thought was tsunami. We live on the beach and I’m thinking in a hour, a 10ft wall of water might come sweeping through this house – I’ve got to get the kids and (wife) Margi up onto the hill where my daughter goes to school. But ten minutes later I was cool. I went to my car, turned the radio on and it said there was no worry about a tsunami. We were prepared anyway – we actually had candles, so we had a candlelit dinner with our kids, and we cooked on the gas grill outside. It turned into a really cool day.

Do you get hassle on Oahu from Lost fanatics?

There’s definitely a little bit more action on the island from people who are curious about Lost. There’s more paparazzi. But it doesn’t really impact on my life. Maybe people just aren’t interested – and that’s great. But people like Dominic (Monaghan) and Evangeline (Lilly) have guys following them quite a bit.

We hear the producers have banned the outbreaks of mass cast skinny-dipping for which you were largely responsible?

You heard that? From who? Well, I can tell you it’s not true Nobody’s gonna stop me from taking my clothes off when I want to take my clothes off.

Great! Now we’re alone here. No one’s listening. So tell us on the quiet, who’s Kate going to pick: Jack or Sawyer?

You want me to just tell you?

Go on then.

You’ll find out soon! All I’ll say is she’s going to make her choice. It gets resolved, not because she decides, but because of circumstances that are outside her control. In fact, it won’t leave it that resolved at all, really.

That’s the thing with Lost – nothing is ever resolved. It’s getting frustrating!

There are all kinds of questions. But I’ve always approached them with the faith that at some point there is going to be a final resolution on this show. The fact that this island exists, that we’ve seen black smoke and polar bears and that there’s some sort of massive energy force emanating out of it…All of these things will eventually make sense in the world that the writers have created.
