‘Marshall’ gets it right, tells story with respect
SOUTH BEND — McG is anxiously perched on a bench in the back of the College Football Hall of Fame’s Stadium Theater as the lights finally come up.
His eyes scan the room until he spots Jack Lengyel, the real-life coach at the heart of McG’s film, “We Are Marshall,” which chronicles the rebirth of Marshall University’s football program after the 1970 team was killed in a plane crash.
Lengyel is smiling.
The two work their way toward each other and embrace while the nearly 200 people who saw this special advance screening Tuesday night continue to stand and applaud the emotionally charged film.
It’s the first time Lengyel has seen “We Are Marshall,” which was finished Nov. 8.
“I’m in complete awe,” he says. Relief washes over McG’s face. more
