During our extensive research in preparation for the premiere of the new thriller Vantage Point, we observed that Matthew Fox, the not-bad-to-look-at star of Lost, grew up on a horse ranch in Wyoming. We kept this in mind as we prepared to interview Vantage’s stars on the big night, thoughtfully studying our list of questions, prioritizing some and eliminating others (probably there would be technical difficulties involved in asking Mr. Fox to remove his shirt, for instance). By the time Matthew, who we will always remember as Charlie on Party of Five, reached us on the red carpet, he was overwhelmed by reporters with tape recorders. They all were assaulting him with questions about his role as a Secret Service agent. At a lull, we took a deep breath and jumped in with the number-one question on our finely honed list. US actor Matthew Fox says people shouldn’t jump to conclusions about the circumstances surrounding Heath Ledger’s death and speculation it was a drug overdose is unfair. Fox, the star of the hit TV show Lost, who is in Sydney promoting his upcoming movie Vantage Point, today said he was saddened to hear of the actor’s death and felt for his family. Ledger was found dead at his New York apartment yesterday. Post-mortem examination tests on the 28-year-old were inconclusive. But speculation has mounted he died from a drug overdose amid revelations that prescription drugs - including pills to treat insomnia and anxiety - and a $20 note were found near his bed. Ledger recently admitted to taking the prescription drug Ambien to combat insomnia. Fox said speculation was not helpful to anyone, especially Ledger’s family. “Any time a 28-year-old parent passes away that’s a sad thing. And I feel for his family, for his daughter. It’s very sad,” Fox, 41, said. “The one thing I hope happens here is that people don’t jump to conclusions about how all this went down. “It could’ve easily been a total accidental thing, it happens to people and so I think everybody should just take a breath and let the family deal with it. “When people start jumping to conclusions about what went down I think that’s awfully unfair.” Reports have suggested Ledger may have found playing the Joker role in the new Batman movie too much and that the part left him unable to sleep.
